Straight-on, directly above, and quartering toward shots all present a higher risk for the hunter and the animal. Straight-on shot increases the risk of hitting the animal's front leg bones which can hinder its mobility and cause unnecessary suffering. Directly above shot offers smaller target areas and a higher risk of hitting non-vital areas such as the spine or neck. Quartering toward shot also presents a higher risk of hitting non-vital areas and can result in the arrow deflecting off the shoulder blade. Therefore, quartering away is the best shot to take for a clean and humane kill.
